ANCHOR: The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to decide whether existing civil rights laws protect gay and transgender people in the workplace nationwide.
Currently, circuit courts around the country are split. Florida has ruled civil rights laws that forbid workplace rules discrimination based on sex simply means male and female. State lawmakers haven’t weighed in either.
AARON TANDY: Florida currently just doesn’t have a statewide statute specifically prohibiting bias in hiring promotion job assignments termination or compensation on the basis of one’s sexual orientation.
ANCHOR: Employment law attorney Aaron Tandy stresses that LGBTQ individuals in Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe counties have workplace protection through county and local ordinances.
