Pathman Schermer Tandy, LLP senior counsel Julie Dick recently participated in a panel at the University of Miami School of Law addressing local environmental issues. Other panelists included representatives from the City of Miami Beach, Miami Waterkeeper and Sierra Club.

Panelists addressed the growing field of experts engaged in legal work, policy and capital projects to implement climate adaptation and reduce climate pollution emissions in South Florida.  The panelists discussed the declining environmental health of Biscayne Bay, its contributing factors and efforts to improve the well-being of the Bay.  This included a dialogue around the policies and practices that federal, state, and local governments and private entities are implementing to address water quality concerns.

“The private sector will continue to play a vital role in creating a resilient South Florida,” said Dick, who has more than a decade of experience in environmental, land use, energy, resilience, and sustainability related matters. She represents businesses, developers, local governments, and individuals in these areas.

Dick discussed the process of implementing commitments to clean energy through navigating the regulatory and legal framework governing energy projects and procurement in Florida.  She also highlighted the growing legal complexities for businesses and local governments faced with the challenges of climate change.

Dick has extensive experience representing clients before administrative and regulatory bodies at the municipal, state, and federal levels. She has been involved in climate change adaptation, resilience, and comprehensive planning efforts, and water and land use matters in multiple counties across South Florida. She has worked with clients to develop regulatory and policy strategies for the deployment of clean energy and infrastructure electrification.  Her experience includes advising investors on environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks and opportunities, including climate change risk due diligence.

Dick’s litigation experience includes multiple high-profile multi-million dollar cases, including Clean Water Act and toxic tort litigation.  She has been involved in Everglades restoration projects, dredge and fill matters, National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permitting, and marine zoning.  She has also worked extensively on National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) analysis and solid waste issues, including Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and toxic tort matters.

She frequently lectures on sustainability, resilience, climate change and water related topics.

Dick received her J.D. with honors, Certificate in Environmental and Energy Law, from Chicago-Kent College of Law, Chicago, Illinois in 2007. She received her BA from Kalamazoo College in Political Science, with a concentration in Environmental Studies in 1999.
